Karen I am not sure, I suppose go with your gut? A little panado will take away a headache so that is not reason to stay home from school. When genuinely sick there are always more indications than just them saying kwim.
My kids stay home sick if I can see physically they are sick - fever, not eating, in pain, that puffy eyed look, breathing is strained, groggy anything that indicates not the norm.

Mine are still too small to be avoiding activities they dont like so not sure what I will do when we get to that stage. Hopefully we will be able to talk about it and sometimes they will go and 'endure' and I am sure sometimes I will be a little compassionate if it is honestly required and let them have a duvet day.

When my daughter says she has a headache and feels sick, there is usually something happening at school (like a fight with her friends or an activity that she does not want to participate in). Howeevr, I am sure that there are times when she is genuinely sick - how do I know when to believe her ??

I'm all for kids missing school if it doesn't 'hurt' them.

I also believe there are things (fun and educational and social) that schools can't offer. When I can, I go all out to make it happen. School or no school.

We do happen to have two girls. One who won't miss school no matter what I throw at her. The other who'll miss school to visit a sanitation plant : )
